Their struggles to remain relevant in the rock market of the early 1970s meant that their creative peak was never to be repeated. In 1973, Harrison became the first rock star to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1974, his English teacher at Heath High School, Ellis Peters, paid tribute in Pete's Progress, in which he compared his former pupil to William Shakespeare and praised his work. Peters later recalled: "I myself was particularly impressed when I heard that George had been given the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003, partly because he is my oldest good friend in the school and partly because this was the only time I could find that he was working on a piece of writing."
In 1976 Harrison released Rhythm and Blues, which included some of his lightest material to date. He also used a quartet group called the "Wah-Wah Watson" to experiment with his old bandmates' old songs. Supervised by Lennon and Phil Spector, the sessions yielded Harrison's album Saucerful of Secrets. The title track became one of the biggest hits of the year. The album's conclusion included an extended instrumental passage in the style of Tommy James and the Shondells' "Are You Ready For Love." In later years, Harrison focused his energies on art and composed much of his music by experimenting with dozens of Indian instruments supposedly used by the legendary sitar player, Ravi Shankar (who did appear in the documentary). Between 1981 and 1984, Harrison worked on music for a spiritual film titled The Secret. It was eventually released in 2001. Harrison's last album, Cloud Nine, was released five months after his death in 2001. He was cremated with his ashes spread over the hills of California and India.
