Managing the enormous data flow to various storage devices on modern computing clusters is a complex task. The large ad-hoc storage area networks and solid-state disks used for storing the data pose a challenge with respect to performance, data reliability, and network connectivity. This article describes the integration of a modern in-house developed storage management from Cisco Systems into the Linux operating system. The storage management compiles raw data from many sources into a standard format. This in-house developed storage management integrates data analysis techniques and clustering. Cisco Systems storage systems can be managed using a number of tools including Cisco and the NetSetup software. The storage management performs such tasks as data integrity checking, data storage provisioning, data mirroring and redundancy, data backup, data backup, and data mirroring and replication. It currently operates using a cluster of ten in-house developed Linux servers and has been tested and used with several large CDF archives.
Communication between UNIX and Linux resources on a network can be problematic when they are both located on the same machine or when one system has to interact with a number of other systems. In this paper, the authors describe the accuracy, efficiency, and issues associated with existing communication facilities and methods used in the AT&T UNIX operating system. Examples of these facilities and communication methods include TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), UDP (User Datagram Protocol), and the CLI (Command Line Interface). They outline some of the problems associated with these facilities and explain some of the innovative techniques used to overcome these problems.
The Linux kernel provides APIs for advanced monitoring and diagnostic tools. The API calls are useful if the application programmer is interested in a specific component rather than a specific service such as filesystem, network, or hardware. Recent changes to the Linux 2.6 kernel, have reduced the need for these diagnostic calls and thus the kernel developer has removed most of these APIs. The Advanced Power Management API was still present, however, and is documented in this paper. The API provides basic power management facilities required by many telecom applications such as wireless users. d2c66b5586
