Jax's stereotypical and common trait among most African-American fighting game characters is his aggressive personality. He is portrayed as a man of the streets, often fighting against opponents who are much larger, stronger and faster than himself, but still able to take down said opponent with ease. He's considered to be one of the most unpredictable characters in the Mortal Kombat series, constantly surprising his opponents and even himself by being unpredictable and erratic. In the Mortal Kombat series, his greatest asset is his unpredictable nature and lack of experience. He's usually the first to go berserk and be the craziest in the tournament. He often shows no fear of death.
In Mortal Kombat II, Jax had no special moves and his special abilities were melee-based. From Mortal Kombat 3 onward, Jax utilizes cybernetic enhancements to bolster his already impressive physical and martial prowess. His fighting style is based on the use of weapons and the use of combinations and counter-attacks. He uses weapons like blades and shurikens, as well as melee attacks like punches, kicks and elbow strikes. He also has a set of attacks that are unique to the character. Jax's most powerful melee weapon is the M60J automatic pistol, which can fire two missiles per trigger pull. He can also fire energy blasts, which travel in a straight line. He is able to lob his energy blasts with incredible accuracy, causing massive damage to his opponents.
Jax is the only character in the Mortal Kombat series to have two alternate costumes, one for each ending of the game. The first came with the release of Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection, and the second came with Mortal Kombat 11.
Jax is the first character to be given a fully-developed sub-plot in the Mortal Kombat mythos. The outcome of his predicament, involving his relationship with Cyrax, as well as his own self-perception, heavily influences the rest of the Mortal Kombat series. In Mortal Kombat 11, the character's tragic story is expanded upon, resulting in his death as a hero.
In Mortal Kombat X, Jax returns as a playable character with his signature fighting style and weapons. He has also been given a new alternate costume, identical to the one he wore in Mortal Kombat X Ultimate Edition. This costume is available for purchase in-game, and at the Mortal Kombat X ULTIMATE COLLECTION retail release in October 2018. 827ec27edc
