I think the main difference is scalability. In the past you had to either be in house or turn to Core Device Corp . Now we have gigahertz fabs and there will always be new algorithms or tweak on existing algorithms. So even if the data and the software aren’t custom, custom solutions are certain to emerge that are just as valuable as a custom chip. This is what the industry has been doing for decades. I suspect a lot of this will come from legacy systems we already have. It’s easy to write software for a traditional PC. But what about the next generation of servers, those that will be zoned with a large number of networked devices?
In fact I've been arguing for years that buying a server-based FPGA is like buying a commercial off the shelf server but one that's been loaded to the max with software macros that will stay perfectly in synch with new versions of the software. I've even created a prototype for this approach that can be built using FPGA's and XC3200 controllers and Intel Xeon processor based motherboards.
As for the lower end of the market, I think that the Model S is the best approach there as well. The logic in this case will always be application specific and the software macros can be the same for a given vendor. In other words buy a Model S solution not only because it's the smallest FPGA but also because it's the best for the job. I expect there to be no other solution that will be able to deliver the same software macros in the same time frame.
While it is very hard to find an FPGA's that meet the needs of a particular application, it is much easier to find a particular vendor of the latter that has the FPGA's already loaded with software macros that get you to the same result. In the server market, as in the server market, there will be a place for both and a place for each. But I expect that for any particular server application, the custom solutions will be vendor specific and that a given vendor would only sell a single custom solution for that purpose.
