But then I saw the work of Satyajit Ray and other filmmakers from India. I started seeing that they were making work that was really interesting and creative and I started thinking that maybe I could learn something from them. I started reading more about the history of experimental film and it became clear to me that it had been the most interesting and innovative period of film, maybe ever, and that the people who made it were significantly influenced by developments in anthropology, psychotherapy, and the music of the ’60s and ’70s. I started thinking about the relationship of sound to visuals, the way that sound was created, how it was recorded and what it meant to people when it moved out of the realm of the acoustic and became the soundtrack to their lives. I started feeling that I could learn a lot from the work of this other category of filmmakers.
I thought, if I am going to take this seriously, I am going to have to learn about the history of ethnographic film and write my dissertation on that. I started looking at other ethnographic filmmakers from around the world and started to understand that there is a lot of interesting work being done in a lot of different places by many different filmmakers, and that there are many different ways of doing ethnographic filmmaking—some documentations of the everyday from the perspective of the people, some anthropological representations of the world in a way that was more oriented toward cultural reproduction and the use of cinema as a medium to create a coherent narrative and represent a more complex and nuanced understanding of the world. I started thinking that maybe I should put my nose into this world and find out what I could learn.
