Music videos were introduced into the market in 1985 with the release of the Pioneer MultiMedia 2. However, it was not until 1989 that the first consumer VCR was released which could play CDs. Soon these VCRs were released worldwide. In 1988, Philips founded the Video CD format with the first disc being released in June 1991. It was the successor to the Video Home System (VHS) standard, although this latter format was used primarily for public access for the first few years of the Consumer VCD system, and many features of VHS were also carried over into VCD. These are not backward compatible with VHS videotapes, therefore most video enthusiasts still use them. They are also referred to as VCD or 'video karaoke' players.
Many VCD players can also play regular CDs. These VCD players also have a feature called 'Subcode Music System' which uses a subcode track to identify and display the lyrics and artist info. Currently, VCDs are widely used mainly for feature film consumption, and also an increasing number of home videos are now being produced in the VCD format. In the 1990s, the DVD emerged as an affordable alternative for fans of music videos. With a 120-minute playing time and the ability to burn the data to produce a full length video, DVDs are now the standard for home video consumption, although VCDs are still in use.
Videocassette (VHS) players were first released in 1958 and, with the advent of the compact disc player and general popularity of music video, many people who grew up with VHS moved on to DVD. On December 6, 1985, a consortium of four record companies in the United Kingdom (PolyGram, EMI, Island Records, and CBS) released the first standard for music video on Betamax, which used a unique system for the content storage. This system was also capable of recording and playing back to VHS with the VHS-C format. The first VHS-C player was introduced in 1986 in the United Kingdom and used a unique hardware system for the storage of the VHS-C.[29] d2c66b5586
