The Maryland Cyberinfrastructure Institute (MCII) is a five-year National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Coordination Networks (RCN) Center of Excellence. Its mission is to promote the digital infrastructure of the United States and leverages the collaborative power of multiple universities, research institutions, grantee organizations, the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), and others to help meet the information and computing needs of the nation. A part of the broader Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute, MCII was founded by five Maryland institutions: The University of Maryland College Park, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, University of Maryland, Baltimore, Johns Hopkins, and College of Computer Information Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The center is based at the University of Maryland, College Park. In addition to the main Washington, DC office, the center also has an office in Reston, VA and a branch office in Springfield, VA. The mission of MCII is to "lead the nation in the development, deployment and application of the technologies and tools necessary to create and leverage a digital infrastructure that supports research and education at all levels".[135]
OverDrive, a North Carolina non-profit corporation, makes accessible to readers and learners library materials that are not otherwise available for free, including over 260,000 audio and visual items, from over 2,000 libraries. It partners with more than 29,000 school districts, over 1,200 public libraries and 50 public library systems. The vast majority of OverDrive materials are in the public domain, and over half are in the public domain for three years or more. OverDrive provides a digital library program that links public domain materials, and proprietary donations. To validate authorship, readability and quality, OverDrive processes all material with the OverDrive Readiness Tool before licensing it.
