Narrator: Scott put together a crack crew. Tom Marsh and Ben Anderson, two former NASA engineers who'd worked on the Mars Rovers, were brought on early to be the first to arrive. In some cases, the agency is sending out spare people who already have experience at interrupting their careers to help with a project.
You can see it as a sort of visual microscope that allows you to see the surface in detail much like what's done on the ISS. We've got two of those, and they also help with mapping similar to what happens on the Mars Rover. Essentially, on each of these cameras, they take 120 pictures per second and essentially a computer algorithm processes the raw data. The algorithm then tells you what is in the picture, and you can determine what type of features it is, for example, water ice, or rock or vegetation or sand or snow. The algorithms also allow you to recognize the color of the substance in the picture.
Narrator: The company Ares was contracted primarily to develop the scientific instruments. The largest among these is a thermal imager, which can be mounted on the rover's mast to photograph Mars from another angle to look at its surface and determine how much surface material, for example, is frozen in ice, how much is frozen in water.
They'll be responsible for, helping with, the robotics engineering, which you have to have for a rover like this. So that's the first thing that you need to get set up before you can actually, basically, start programming software. There are numerous software packages for various operating systems that's used in Mars, including Linux, and on the surface, you use a processor called the Beaglebone that, once you set it up, works the same as a PC. But there's very little memory, so you constantly have to be transferring bits of data to the spacecraft to keep it alive. And this is the path that the whole team has gone, you know, from when we first began, where it was the robotics engineers and the software engineers and the electrical engineers. 7211a4ac4a
