The XML-MTF is the message catalogue standard for MIL-STD-6040B and is the common message communication language of US military tactical data exchange information, physical protocol messages and mission data that can be used by tactical data exchange and mission data management (MDM) systems. The USMTF is the only organisation responsible for maintaining the XML-MTF message catalogue. A common, interoperable method for communicating between tactical data exchange system users, means that they can exchange information without having to be aware of the implementation details of the other system. The XML-MTF allows for the creation of an extensible set of messages and therefore permits the addition of new messages for new requirements as they arise. US users may also add their own messages to the catalogue, with the support of the USMTF.
MIL-STD-6040B is supported by commercial applications such as SharpARIS, Fujitsu's WorkStation and Microsoft's Microwindows. In addition, there are some Unix/Linux and DOS/Windows environments that are already able to read and write the standard. The MIL-STD-6040BMTF is also used by the US Navy's NetCERTS and DECMAL products. MIL-STD-6040BMTF files can also be imported into SharpARIS or Workstation, where it will allow you to view and edit the messages as well as the associated MIL-STD-6040C messages.
The USMTF message catalogue is maintained by the US Army, US Navy and US Air Force. The message catalogue is delivered in a very orderly manner, with a new baseline released every year. The USMTF Configuration Control Board (CCB) approves all messages for entry into the catalogue and ensures that the messages remain in accordance with USMTF rules.
The messages in the USMTF message catalogue have been continuously available for use in the US defense community for over 20 years. The message catalogue is available in many formats, including XML-MTF, as a series of USMTF messages, and as Data Text Formats. Each day, the message catalogue is searched against user-defined rules to determine what messages are available to use.
